JPG vs PNG vs WebP: When to Use Which

JPG (JPEG)

The universal format. JPG uses lossy compression — it discards some image data to achieve small file sizes. Best for: photographs, realistic images with gradients and complex colour, any image where file size matters more than pixel-perfect accuracy. Not ideal for: images with text, line art, screenshots, logos, or anything with sharp colour transitions (JPG creates visible artifacts at edges).

PNG

Lossless compression — every pixel is preserved exactly. Supports transparency (alpha channel). Best for: logos, icons, screenshots, illustrations, images with text, any graphic that needs crisp edges and exact colours. Not ideal for: photographs (PNG files are significantly larger than JPG for photographic content).

WebP

Google's modern format, supported by all major browsers since 2021. Achieves 25–35% smaller file sizes than JPG at equivalent quality, and 25–45% smaller than PNG for lossless content. Best for: website images where page load speed matters. Not ideal for: compatibility with older software or services that don't support WebP.
